Vanessa's former husband, the NBA legend, Kobe Bryant, was reported dead on Sunday, 26 January 2019, after his private helicopter crashed in the hills above Calabasas, California.

Kobe was traveling to a youth basketball game with her 13-year-old daughter, Gianna. Unfortunately, her daughter also didn't survive in the dreadful crash.

Many investigators have stated that the crash happened due to the bad weather conditions. Moreover, the Los Angeles Police Department's spokesman Josh Rubenstein stated that the chopper wasn't given permission to take off on Sunday morning due to the foggy conditions around the location, and it only took off after the weather started to clear off slowly.

Along with Kobe and his daughter, Gianna, seven more peoples, who were in the helicopter, died, including the pilot.

Kobe's death was mourned by numerous athletes around the world, which includes Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo, and Dwyane 'The Rock' Johnson. Likewise, his millions of fans around the world were also shocked by hearing the news of Kobe's death.

The two met for the first time in 1999 while Vanessa was performing as a background dancer on Tha Eastsidaz music video, “G’d Up,” and Kobe was also working on his debut musical album on the same building. They were attracted at first sight and began dating.

Just after six months in May 2000, the couple got engaged when Vanessa was still in her senior year at her high school. 

Nearly a year later, the couple tied the knot on 18th April 2001 when Vanessa was just 17, and Kobe was 22. The wedding ceremony was organized at St. Edward the Confessor Catholic Church in Dana Point, California. 

However, the wedding was not attended by Kobe’s parents, his two sisters, and his teammates. It was reportedly said they Kobe’s parents also didn’t sign any prenuptial agreement since they had problems with him marrying so young and with a non-African-American girl. However, they became close after the couple’s first child. 

After ten years of married life, Vanessa filed for divorce from Kobe on 16th December 2011, citing irreconcilable differences. However, on 11th January 2013, they announced through social media that they had rekindled, calling off their divorce case.

Vanessa Laine Bryant was born on 5 May 1982 in Los Angeles, California, as Vanessa Cornejo Urbieta. 

When she was three-years-old, her parents got divorced, leaving her and her older sister, Sophie, to be raised by their single mother, Sofia Laine. But a few years later, her mother married a businessman, Stephan Laine. Vanessa changed her former name to Vanessa Laine in 2000, legally taking her step-father’s last name though he never adopted her. 

However, her mother divorced her step-father, Stephan, too, in 2002, and they lived in Anaheim and Temecula briefly and finally in West Garden Grove. There, Vanessa attended St. Boniface Parochial School in 1996.
