According to gawker.com, when he and his girlfriend got into an argument with three others in a hallway at the Loews Atlanta Hotel, Wendell got arrested and was charged with pure battery for staging an attack against a female.

On 8 December 1963, Wendell, now age 55, was born to a teacher and a decorated World War II veteran. His father, who was also a maintenance engineer, segregated his Army unit to help the Marines win the Battle of Saipan.
Wendell, alongside his two siblings, was raised in the black middle-class community of Pontchartrain Park, the first African-American post-war suburb.
