Tye and Melissa first met in 2005 in their hometown Dallas, Texas, while they were attending a mutual friends' party. Shortly after their meeting, they began dating.

Three years later, the couple separated when Melissa went on to participate as a contestant in the reality show, The Bachelor in 2008. There, Melissa was engaged to her co-contestant Jason Mesnick after he proposed to her during the finale of the 13th season of the show.

However, she was jilted by Jason on national television after he decided to begin a relationship with the department store buyer and runner-up, Molly Malaney. But their separation helped Melissa and Tye rekindle in January 2009. 

A couple of months later, they got engaged in June 2009. Then after six months, the couple tied the knot on 12th December 2009 at sunset in a beach ceremony in Isla Mujeres, Mexico. On the wedding day, attended by close friends and family only, the bride wore an Alfred Angelo gown.
