Vietnamese-American actress, Hong Chau is best known for her appearance in the US film Downsizing as Vietnamese amputee and political activist Ngoc Lan Tran. She was nominated for Golder Globe Award for Best Supporting Actress for her role in Downsizing. She claimed her way to fame for her impeccable work in A to Z in 2014, Inherent Vice in 2014, and Treme in 2010.

Born in Thailand in 1979, Hong Chau grew up in a refugee camp. Her parents were Vietnamese immigrants parents who fled Vietnam in 1979. Vietnamese Catholic church organized the sponsor for a Vietnamese family, and she grew up speaking Vietnamese as her first language and later learned English.

After completing her education, she started working at PBS but later moved to New York City where she began her acting career. She has appeared on shows like “My Boys, “NCIS,” “How I Met Your Mother,” “CSI” and “$#*! My Dad Says.” Chau’s current career of being an actress was never her dream. Her film-studies degree came about because she had an interest in creative writing.

Chau was an “internship queen” in college where she worked at a camera house “cleaning lenses and filters” for a documentary-maker named David Sutherland. His 2006 PBS film “Country Boys” earned Chau one of her first IMDB entries.
Her first paid acting job was for an Asian TV network which was a “hybrid reality show,” for which she and another actress drove from New York to San Francisco while the cameras rolled.
Chau has participated in diversity-showcase programs for CBS and NBC. She also works in commercials and pursues the annual audition grind of the pilot season.
