She became a presenter and segment producer for Current TV and The Young Turks online. Hermala was also a part of the award-winning coverage of the 2012 Presidential Election during her time at The Young Turks.

The presenter eventually joined Al Jazeera America as a correspondent alongside Libby Casey. Al Jazeera was an American basic cable that was owned by the Al Jazeera Media Network. The channel was initiated in August 2013 to compete with CNN, Fox News, and several other networks. But, it got shut down in April 2016.
