Adam’s father, Daniel Serwer, is a professor at John Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies and a scholar at the Middle East Institute. He has also worked at the United States Institute of Peace in D.C.
His mother is the Chief Curator at the National Museum of African American History and Culture. Previously, she served as Chief Curator of the Corcoran Gallery for seven years since 1999.

His father is white and Jewish, while his mother is African-American. So Adam is biracial and Jewish when it comes to his ethnicity.
His parents met each other at Haverford College, where both of them were classmates.
They fell in love with each other but faced a problem when they decided to marry. The problem was there were no rabbis, religious teachers of Jews, to perform their marriage ritual since interfaith marriage was barely accepted.
But somehow, they arranged a rabbi for their wedding and got married in 1968.
Since Adam's parents were highly educated persons, both with doctoral degrees, Adam benefitted from it.
