Steves taught travel classes at the beginning of his career through The Experimental College, which is a program run by students and has no credits. He graduated from the University of Washington. At his vacations, he worked as a tour guide in the summer. At the time, he also worked as a piano teacher. His father owned a piano store. He wrote the first edition of his travel guidebook in 1979 named `Europe Through the Back Door (ETBD),' which was a general guide to traveling in Europe. After that Rick held different travel classes and presentations, organized a few group tours per year. He also did travel consulting and updated his travel books.
Steves' first television show was `Travels in Europe with Rick Steves`, was first aired on public television in April 1991 and ended production in 1998. His second show was `Rick Steves' Europe,` which aired in September 2000, and has produced episodes through 2016 because the season was not produced every year. The show went on for nine seasons. Steves encourages and motivates his viewers and readers to visit not just major cities but also to the villages which are far away from the popular tourist areas. His television series, guidebooks, radio shows and his company's European escorted bus tours have attracted many of his fans and followers who are known as "Rickniks."
Steves is also involved in politics and is a member of the Democratic Party. He publicly endorsed the 2016`s presidential campaign of Democratic leader Hillary Clinton. He has also raised a voice to legalize marijuana use. He is a huge supporter of Martin Luther King. He is also involved in community services and helps those who don’t have their home. He constructed a large apartment complex in Lynnwood, Washington in 2005; it’s called `Trinity Way` and is administrated by the local YWCA. It provides transitional houses for homeless mothers and their children.
