When complications started arising on Mary and Gene's married life, Katharine suspected that Gene was having an affair with his Young Frankenstein co-star, Madeline Kahn.
Gene and Mary officially divorced on 24 November 1980. Alongside the divorce, Gene also became estranged from his only adopted daughter, Katharine.
