James, with an entirely Ashkenazi Jewish ancestry, grew up in Reform Judaism with his parents and older sister Katie Ray. His father, Robert Wolk, was a shoe store owner, and his mother, Edie Wolk, was an art teacher.

As a child, James used to entertain his parents by singing and dancing to Frank Sinatra songs since his father was a fan of Frank Sinatra. He also worked in his father’s shoe store during his teenage years.
After he graduated from the North Farmington High School in 2003, James thought of studying medicine or law at the University of Michigan.
However, he chose to follow his passion and attended the University of Michigan’s School of Music, Theatre & Dance, and graduated with a degree in 2007.
During his college years, he performed in various theatrical productions, including You Can’t Take It With You, The Laramie Project, and Arthur Miller Celebration, among many.
