Paul Allen Smith is a television host, conservationist, lifestyle expert and a garden designer. He was born on March 12, 1960, in Little Rock, Arkansas in the United States. He grew up in McMinnville, Tennessee with his family. Smith is a fourth-generation nurseryman and horticulturist. Smith was inspired by a childhood spent on the farm raising and showing livestock and poultry.

He hosts two television programs. His program P. Allen Smith's Garden Home airs on public television. Also, he hosts another 30-minute show called Garden Style which is in syndication.

Smith is one of America's most recognized gardening and design experts who provide ideas and guidance through multiple media venues and platform. He is also the author of the Garden Home series of books which is published by Clarkson Potter/Random House. His books include Crafts and Bouquets for Every Room, Bringing the Garden Indoors: Container and the cookbook titled Seasonal Recipes from the Garden which is inspired by the abundance of food from his farm and a family of cooks.

Smith's television shows were very successful at the Taste Awards in 2014. In the award show, Smith won four Taste Awards. Smith was inducted into the Taste Hall of Fame for his significant impact in the world of taste and broadcast entertainment in the year 2015. His show Garden Home won Taste Award for “Best Green or Organic Program” in 2017.

Smith founded the Heritage Poultry Conservancy in 2009. It is an organization dedicated to the support and preservation of all threatened breeds of domestic poultry. He went to Hendrix College and received a Rotary International Scholarship to study history and garden design history at the University of Manchester in England. He studied English gardens that had been visited by Thomas Jefferson and John Adams in the 18th century in the University.

He entered the nursery and garden design business with his family in Little Rock, Arkansas after he returned to the United States. He then focused on reviving interest in perennials. Smith also started working as a private tour guide to European gardens and also started teaching gardening workshops. It led him to appear on local television shows.

Smith has frequently appeared on the NBC Today Show, CBS Early show, The Weather Channel and other national TV programs which teach viewers about gardening and design techniques. Smith has also written several books on gardening and contributes different articles to numerous publications. In 2006, Smith received the Garden Club of America's 'Medal of Honor' at the GCA's 93rd Annual Meeting Awards Dinner which was held in Denver, Colorado.
