Richard Rankin was born as Richard Harris on 4th January 1983 in Glasgow, Scotland.

He spent most of his early childhood in the west end, where his family had a flat on Byres Road and then moved to King’s Park on the south side when he was ten-years-old.

He is the eldest of the four sons born to his father, Colin, and mother, Margaret. His father was a drummer previously involved in music but later became a police officer. He passed away in 2018. His mother works in the hotel industry.

Richard studied a course in Information Technology at Glasgow Caledonian University. Later, he studied acting at Langside College in Glasgow, Scotland.

Career

After graduating in IT, Richard Rankin began working in a bank, and during that time, he went for a Hollywood trip where he stayed at Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel. There, he met a group of filmmakers and began chatting with them. From the group, one producer told him that he had a good look to be an actor; the producer also asked him whether he had thought to be in the industry or not. This event planted a small idea on him and was enough to motivate him to pursue a career in acting.

After returning to his hometown, Glasgow, he took acting classes and soon landed a role in the play, Mary Queen of Scots. Gradually, he began to get roles in television as well as theatrical roles.

Some of his first TV roles include minor performances in the TV show, Legit as Nelson in 2007, and The Old Guys as Groom in 2009.

His big break role came when he was cast in a recurring role in the TV show, Burnistoun.

In 2014, he made his big-screen debut by portraying the role of Him in the movie, The House of Him. The same year, he characterized Capt. Thomas Gillan in the TV series, The Crimson Field.

Next year, Richard played the role of Sean McGary in the series, The Syndicate and 2016, he performed as DI Elliott Carne in the TV mini-series, Thirteen. Also, from 2016 to 2020, he portrayed the popular character, Roger Wakefield, in the successful TV series, Outlander.
