Known for his versatility, Chuck first began his career in broadcasting in 1966 at KHVH-TV in Honolulu as a reporter and anchor. He also worked for KENI-TV in Anchorage, Alaska, and WMAQ-TV in Chicago, both of which was affiliated to NBC.
While working there, Chuck produced and hosted an on-air show titled, Your Army Neighbor, a community program featuring members of the military.
After he worked at WMAQ-TV, Chuck returned to KABC-TV in Los Angeles in 1982. He had worked there as an anchor, reporter, producer, and director for a while before he joined WMAQ-TV team.
