Derek was born on 17 May 1985 in Sandy, Utah, a suburb of Salt Lake City. He was brought up by mother Marianne and father Bruce Hough alongside five other children. As he was raised in a family of a dancer, the heredity undoubtedly kicked in him to become a gifted artist.

However, his parents divorced due to some unknown reason, and after their divorce, Derek was sent to London to live and study with dance coaches, Corky, and Shirley Ballas.

Derek attended Italia Conti Academy of Theatre Arts, where he received training in song, theater, gymnastics, and many forms of dance.
