Austin Scarlet’s Biography

Austin was born on 1983 in Cottage Grove, Oregon, to parents Debra Little and Christopher Scarlett as Austin Lee Scarlet. Austin specialized in couture and evening wear design and earned the degree in fashion design from the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York City. He also joined the Art Students League of New York and received fine arts training.

After graduation, he honed his talent in dressmaking as an apprentice fashion archivist at the Museum at FIT, and a theatrical costume design assistant and pattern maker.

He first gained international recognition for his designs on the original season of Project Runway (2004 to 2005) by winning the first challenge of the program with his famed corn husk dress.

After the achievement, he produced couture wedding collections under his name for fall 2005 and spring 2006.

In the year 2006, Austin joined New York-based bridal-design house Amsale as Creative Director of its luxury gown collection, Kenneth Pool, where he served until 2009.

Austin developed, hosted and designed in his critically acclaimed television program, On the Road with Austin, and Santino in 2010. Later, captivated the hearts and minds of millions with his unique style on Project Runway All-Stars.

Being a fashion historian and expert, he even lectured at Yale, New York Public Library, Parsons School of Design, and the University of Texas.

Not only that, but he also authored the book, Forever Scarlett, the Immortal Style of Gone with the Wind.

Austin has designed costumes for Juilliard, Fort Worth Opera, David Parson's Dance on PBS, The Aspen Santa Fe Ballet, and Shen Wei Dance Arts at the Park Avenue Armory and Metropolitan Museum of Art.
