Justina Machado is an actress who was born in Chicago. Illinois, U.S. on September 6, 1972. She is an American actress of Puerto Rican descent. She is known for her roles in HBO drama series Six Feet Under as Vanessa Diaz and as Brenda on the drama called Queen of the South. Machado appeared on the show by Netflix, One Day at a Time, in her first starring TV role in the year 2017.
Her parents migrated from Chicago to Puerto Rico, and there they had two children. Her parents got divorced, and her mother remarried. According to Machado, her family was poor, and she had grown up on the Northwest Side of Chicago. Machado also said that she was raised Catholic.
Machado was very active in drama in her school days and always participated in dramas in her school plays. She took her dance training at Franklin Fine Arts Center. Machado attended Lane Technical College Prep High School in 1986. In her free time, she performed with the Latino Chicago Theater Company. She graduated from Lane Tech in 1990. After that Machado moved to New York City. The experience from performing in Latino Chicago Theater Company helped her open the doors for her in New York.
Very soon she was offered a job in LA, California as a professional actress. Machado soon moved to Los Angeles. In 1996 she got her first two acting roles. She was cast as "Val Cho" in the movie made for television No One Would Tell and as "Elsa" in the TV series called NYPD Blue episode #311.
Machado then auditioned for the TV series called Six Feet Under and was she got cast as Vanessa Diaz on June 10, 2001. Diaz was originally a supporting character which later evolved into one of the main characters of series. The series was completed in 2005. From the series, Machado and her cast mates were awarded a Screen Actors Guild Award for the category "Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series."
She has also acted in the Canadian television series called 1-800-Missing, where she played a character named Sunny Estrada. She appeared in nine episodes of the tv show called ER in the year 2009 as Claudia Diaz. Machado also acted in the movie The Purge: Anarchy as Tanya. Machado is going to have a recurring role in the upcoming third season of Jane the Virgin.
Machado has worked in more than 15 movies. Amongst them the most notable roles she has done so far have been Sofia in The Accidental Husband, Isabella Hudson in Final Destination 2, Henderson in Torque, Carmen Rodriguez in She`s So Lovely, Natalia in Little Fugitive, FBI Agent Rosie Gomez in the film In the Electric Mist and Teresa in Man Maid.
