Joanna Gleason was born 'Joanne Hall' on 2 June 1950 in Toronto, Canada.

Her father, Monty Hall, was a Canadian-American game show host, producer, and philanthropist celebrated as the long-time host of Let's Make a Deal and a brain-teasing probability puzzle named "Monty Hall problem."

Likewise, her mother, Marilyn Hall, was a Canadian television and theatre producer. Sadly, Marilyn passed away on 5 June 2017. A few months later, on 30 September, Joanna's father, Monty also died, of heart failure.  

Joanna has a sister, Sharon Hall, and a brother, Richard Hall: both television writer and director.

Although Joanna Gleason started her acting career in television, she is better known for her stage, and musical theatre works. It was her over the top stage reputation that landed higher-profile work on films and TV shows. She starred in the secondary roles in the films, Hannah and Her Sisters (1986) and Crimes and Misdemeanors (1989).

Moving on, she continued her sardonic spirit in the sitcoms, Love & War, The Practice, The West Wing, and lent her voice to the famous animated sitcom King of the Hill.

Then, she appeared in movies Edie & Pen, American Perfekt, Road Ends, Let the Devil Wear Black, Mr. Holland's Opus, Boogie Nights, and The Wedding Planner.

Joanna Gleason is married to Chris Sarandon, a movie actor who earned an Academy Award nomination for his role as 'Leon Shermer' in American crime-drama film Dog Day Afternoon.

The couple tied the knot on 22 July 1994 after meeting for the first time in 1991 while filming Broadway's adoption of the Thin Man: "Nick and Nora." They also worked together on several other projects.

Joanna and Chris now reside with their four children: Aaron David Gleason, aka Gilly Leads (from Joanna's previous marriage to Paul Gleason), Stephanie, Alexis, and Michael (from Chris's second marriage to Lisa Ann Cooper).

Divorced twice, Joanna was formerly married to Paul G. Gleason (1975—1982) and Michael Bennahum (1984---1990).
