She took her education from different institutions. Renee graduated from Johns Hopkins University and majored in political science. After that, she attended the University Of Pennsylvania Law School and achieved a degree in J.D. from there. She also studied at the University of Missouri which is in Columbia, Missouri and from there she earned a master’s degree in journalism. She started her career working at Hughes Hubbard & Reed in New York which is a law firm. She then started to work as a clerk for Judge Damon Keith of the Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals. She started her media career after her master's degree.

Talking about her media career, she joined the station in September of 1991. There she served as a reporter and an anchor. She anchored the now-defunct noon broadcast with Tim Lake for few years. Then in March 1995, she was promoted to the 6 p.m. and 11 p.m. news. Lake joined Chenault in 2003 as co-anchor at 4 p.m., 6 p.m., and 11 p.m. She had spent eight years co-anchoring newscasts at 11 and 6, with Larry Mendte and Ken Matz. 

Chenault is one of several minority females who has anchored evening weekday newscasts in the state of Philadelphia. The others include WPVI-TV Action News anchor Lisa Thomas-Laury and former KYW TV Eyewitness News anchors Alycia Lane and Beverly Williams

Renee was fired from the station for seven months following her husband's indictment. After this incident, Chenault-Fattah left the station on February 24, 2016. In 2002 Chenault-Fattah was named to the  PoliticsPA list of "Sy Snyder's Power 50" list of influential individuals in Pennsylvania politics. She was also listed in the PoliticsPA list of "Pennsylvania's Most Politically Powerful Women.”

In 2009 the Broadcast Pioneers of Philadelphia inducted Chenault-Fattah into their Hall of Fame.
