Elizabeth Vargas is a TV journalist, anchor and show host from the United States who has won the News & Documentary Emmy Award for Outstanding Instant Coverage of a News Story. She was born on September 6, 1962, in Paterson, New Jersey, United States. She is the anchor of ABC television`s newsmagazine 20/20 and ABC News specials. Her father is Puerto Rican and was in the US Army, and her mother is an Irish-American.

Vargas graduated from the University of Missouri in Columbia with a bachelor`s degree in journalism. There she made her debut as a reporter for KOMU-TV which is an affiliate of NBC. She also worked at WBBM-TV which is an affiliate of CBS in Chicago, Illinois. After working for four years at the Chicago's WBBM, she went to work for NBC News in 1993. There she worked as a correspondent for Dateline NBC and also sub anchored the program `Today`.

She joined Good Morning America in June 1996 as a newsreader. ABC elevated Vargas to primetime magazine show correspondent in June 1997 which was succeeded by Kevin Newman. In November 2003, she began anchoring WNT Sunday which did not last long. She then was named the co-anchor of the program 20/20 in May of 2004.

Vargas became the first woman to anchor a network evening newscast in the country and also the first national evening news anchor of Puerto Rican and Irish-American descent.  She won an Emmy Award in June 1997, for her coverage of the story of Elian Gonzalez. Also in 1998, she was nominated for an Emmy Award for 20/20.

 On May 23, 2006, Vargas resigned from WNT. Gibson then became the sole anchor of the show, replacing Vargas and Woodruff.  Vargas again returned as the co-anchor of 20/20 and started hosting ABC News specials in late 2006. In a special edition of the program 20/20 which aired on September 9, 2016, she opened up about her struggles with anxiety and her problem of drinking alcohol and also talked about her upcoming book named Between Breaths: A Memoir of Panic and Addiction.

After three years of relationship with singer and songwriter Marc Cohn, she married him on  July 20, 2002. The couple has two sons, Zachary Raphael Cohn; born on 2003 and Samuel Wyatt who was born on 2006. Vargas also has two stepchildren named Max and Emily who is from Cohn's first marriage.

In August of 2014, a news source reported that Vargas and her husband Cohn were getting a divorce after 12 years of marriage.
